West Star Farm
Located on 40 acres just 7 miles east of Madison, WI, in the town of Pleasant Springs, West Star Farm in a family-owned organic farm that specializes in growing a wide array of plants, herbs, vegetables and flowers. Their main focus is the quality of all of their products. "We are dedicated to providing you with the highest possible quality of certified organic produce along with excellent service. We sell to markets, grocers and restaurants all around Wisconsin and the Midwest." The landscape of West Star Farm was formed about 16,000 years ago during the Ice Age by a glacier that bulldozed across much of the Wisconsin landscape. Owners, George and Sandy Kohn bought the farm back in 1993. They started West Star Farm in 1998 and it became certified organic in 1999. Since then, they have added a large shed for equipment storage and three greenhouses. The farm includes woodlands (with a walking trail), a pasture, an old farmhouse, and of course, a barn and silo. West Star Farm grows a wide array of plants, herbs, vegetables, and flowers. In late winter, we are busy growing and tending to a variety of bedding plants which we will sell in the spring. Some of the produce we grow throughout the season includes: garlic, onions, kale, potatoes, basil, thyme, parsley, oregano, cilantro, and chives, just to name a few." Sweet corn is one of our specialties, a favorite amont our customers. Another specialty crop we grow is a vegetable called 'salsify' (Google "Salsify" or "Oyster Plant" for more information), which has been described in cooking publications as a "most delicious vegetable."
